Iran Claims Strike on US Warship in Gulf of Oman; Washington Denies Incident

(MENAFN) Iran’s Navy has claimed it targeted a US destroyer operating in the Gulf of Oman, alleging the vessel served as a command-and-control platform linked to American actions against Iranian shipping, according to Iranian military statements.

The Iranian Navy said the operation was carried out in response to what it described as US “aggressive actions” and alleged violations in the Strait of Hormuz, as well as attacks on Iranian commercial vessels in regional waters. It further claimed that Iranian forces identified and engaged a US destroyer attempting to approach Iranian territorial waters.

According to the statement, Iranian naval units struck what they described as the center of command for these operations aboard the destroyer, while also warning that surveillance of US and allied activities in the region would continue.

Iranian officials additionally cautioned that further responses could follow if what they termed hostile actions persist.

US Central Command rejected the claims outright. “Iran is lying. U.S. military assets at sea continue to fly, sail, and operate safely and unimpeded,” it said in a statement posted on social media.

The conflicting accounts add to already heightened tensions in the Gulf region, where maritime security and freedom of navigation remain key points of dispute between Tehran and Washington.
