Trump Claims Iran Tried to Restart Nuclear Program After US Strikes

(MENAFN) As diplomatic discussions draw closer, US President Donald Trump said Wednesday that Iran attempted to revive its nuclear activities after US military strikes carried out over the summer, according to statements made during a televised interview.

Describing the aftermath of the strikes, Trump said Iran tried to return to a targeted location but was unable to do so. “They tried to go back to the site. They weren't even able to get near it, there was total obliteration,” he said. He added that Tehran then considered launching a new effort elsewhere in the country. “But they were thinking about starting a new site in a different part of the country. We found out about it. I said, ‘You do that, we're going to do very bad things to you.’”

Trump’s remarks came as Iran and the United States prepare to hold talks on Tehran’s nuclear program on Friday in Muscat, the capital of Oman. The negotiations had appeared uncertain earlier in the week, but officials later confirmed that the meeting would go ahead as planned.

Iranian authorities also confirmed that the discussions would proceed, with Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi saying they are set to begin on Friday morning.

According to reports, Washington rejected Iranian requests to alter the location or structure of the upcoming talks. “We told them it is this or nothing, and they said, 'Ok, then nothing,'” an unnamed US official was quoted as saying.

Earlier accounts from Iranian media indicated that the two sides were expected to engage in indirect negotiations in Muscat, focusing primarily on nuclear-related matters.

Before Muscat was finalized, Istanbul had been suggested as a possible venue, following Türkiye’s earlier role in helping reduce tensions between Washington and Tehran, according to reports.
