Trump welcomes Iran’s decision to cancel scheduled executions

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump said on Friday that he welcomed Iran’s decision to cancel a large number of scheduled executions.

“I greatly respect the fact that all scheduled hangings, which were to take place yesterday (Over 800 of them), have been cancelled by the leadership of Iran. Thank you!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

However, local media reported that Iranian cleric Ayatollah Ahmad Khatami called for protesters in Tehran to face execution.

Trump has repeatedly expressed support for protesters in Iran and criticized the authorities’ handling of demonstrations that began on December 28 in Tehran over the sharp depreciation of the rial and worsening economic conditions, later spreading to other cities.

The US president had previously suggested he might consider military action if lethal force was used against demonstrators, but reportedly stepped back after Iran announced it would cancel the planned executions.
